[lojban] In memory of John Hodges

John Hodges not only was a close friend for many years, but he also introduced me to lojban and encouraged my continued involvement. lojbab learned today that John Hodges, an early member of the Logical Language Group and learner /supporter of lojban, died on November 27,2018 at the age of 66.

John's interest in lojban was piqued through his interest in loglan, and he first wrote lojbab in January, 1997.

In March of 1989 he gave what I believe  was the first public presentation about lojban, at Technicon, a convention of the the Virginia Tech Science Fiction and Fantasy Club in Blacksburg, Virginia (IUSA). A few people were interested, including me, so John formed a study group using the old draft textbook and original printed wordlists.

That summer John attended the very first LLG Anual Meeting (in-person) in June 1989. He became a Member as well. During that year, John also produced some of, if if not the only, letters lojbab knows of completely written in lojban.

John continued to be actively involved in the LLG until around 2006, but continued to follow news of lojban, the LLG, and the people he knew. John also invited me and my eldest to attend the 25th anniversary lojfest at lojbab and noras' hours, which we did.

John never stopped learning throughout his life, reading as many as 50 books on a subject before he felt he truly grasped it and his apartment included basics for living and bookshelves along most of the walls. Sometimes his investigations would lead him to write astute articles and letters to the Editor of various publications from Wired to the Roanoke Times newspaper. John cared most about the natural world, philosophy, and the wellbeing of people.

As he often ended his writings, “Do Justice, Love Mercy, and Be Irreverent.” That's an excellent aspiration for us all.
