Tornado?? I thought tha= t was konbi'e. As to a paperclip, it is a sort of=20
spring too. There are coil springs and leaf springs, so why not=20
bent-back-to-hold-things springs?

There's no rule that says that a Lojban word has to have the same sema= ntic=20
range as an English word. Lojban and English don't even divide the maj= or=20
parts of speech the same way.

Pierre

"konbi'e" (cone+wind) is just one way to get across the idea of= 'tornado', but certainly not the only way.  "carbi'e" (spin+wind) id= entifies another (perhaps more) salient characteristic of a tornado than= the shape.  It could also refer to hurricanes, water spouts, and dus= t devils, too.
