On 4 May 2022, State Secretary Erlan Karin revealed that some members of the working group for the constitutional reforms had reversed its decision in granting Nazarbayev a newly proposed status. According to Karin, the working group considered it "unnecessary" to tether "Nazarbayev's historical role" to the Constitution, and would not mention Nazarbayev in the document.
