We of course do welcome such donations, but it isn't the driving force of our existence, or our decision-making. > Subject: .uinai > From: Ryan Keppel > To: Robin Lee Powell > Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2006 22:09:08 -0800 > > I scanned your first line and haven't read any more. You have to understand that > I don't care about what anyone else thinks besides me. That is painfully obvious. And he needs to understand that we don't especially care what he thinks BECAUSE he doesn't care what anyone else thinks. His is the attitude of a customer, and not a supporter. We are legally a business, and we like money, but our purpose is not primarily to sell things. And if it were, it is we who decides what we are willing to sell, not him. > se'acai, I believe is the term. I suggest that you stop taking donations, if you > want to keep your inflated ego. His suggestions are unwelcome. For ten times the amount he is offering, I might be polite in response to his donation. At his level of donation, his suggestions warrant no special consideration, and right now we find donations of time, effort and interest far more valuable than donations of money. If he wants to see it in economic terms, the typical professional (like yourself) who is donating their time to Lojban would typically charge $50/hr to $100/hr or more for that time, and many are donating several hours per week to the effort. Against several thousand dollars per month in donated time, his $32 is rather trivial, especially since we are engaged in no projects at the moment especially in need of monetary support. $32 might have meant more to us in 1988, but not these days. > Subject: Re: pe'i > From: Ryan Keppel > To: Robin Lee Powell > Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2006 22:13:53 -0800 > > le'ocai > > $32 to create the list. Paypal might charge additional fees. I personally wouldn't do it for ten times that amount, because of the way it was requested. It would suggest that we will do anything he asks merely for money wherein he sets the price. If he actually gave ten times that amount, and then asked, I might give him a politer response, but I still would not necessarily comply. > You seem to have several mailing lists on your machine. The people who are contributing time and effort to Lojban are not doing so in order to eat. > Your friends at the Singularity Institute also seem to have problems with > donations. A simple fact--if you don't want problems, don't accept donations! Accepting donations does not lead to problems provided that we follow the law. > ko gerku malgaxyvi'i nunta'a .a'unairo'a I could provide you a catalog of my other attitudinal responses to his "offer".
