The answer turns out to be "no".

Dear Kindle: Fuck you, you fucking fucks.

EPUB is basically *the* open, broadly-supported ebook standard. -_-

Anyways.  The program I use to generat EPUB will have no problem
generating MOBI, which Kindle *does* support.
