It would definitely help us to = keep to a more manageable schedule. I think IRC is more difficult and demanding. There's the timezone problem. Participants have to clear a block of two or three hours or more (IRC being slower than face-to-face) and organize their lives to be available at that time, and give up a big chunk of precious leisure time. Discussion is much harder, because it's hard to write at length and there's no floor. And the technology is much harder to get working properly. When LLG switched from IRC to email the meetings were much easier, except for the chair. We just need better chairing, recognizing that chairing an email meeting well is an onerous task.
