One thing most members > present screws on was that starting the start on Friday, Saturday, or > Sunday as well three are religeus days for a major world religeon. I know of two main systems for naming the days of the week among languages of the world. One uses numbers; the other uses Sun, Moon, and planets, gods, or elements. In many languages there are 1-3 days that are named for something else, such as Mittwoch and Samstag in German. Among languages that name days of the week for numbers, there is disagreement as to which day is named for which number. In Russian, there is even internal disagreement: Tuesday is 2, Thursday is 4, Friday is 5, but Wednesday is middle. Among languages that name days of the week for Sun, Moon, etc., as far as I know there is no disagreement. The day named for the Moon is always the same Monday. I therefore think that we should use the Sun-Moon-element system, since the elements have gismu but the planets and gods do not. The Chinese use numbers, but they know the Sun-Moon-element system because the Japanese use it, writing in kanji. So: soldei ce'o lurdei ce'o fagdei ce'o jaudje ce'o mudydei ce'o jimdei ce'o derdei. The color system (xundei ce'o najdei ce'o peldei ce'o ri'odje ce'o cicnydei ce'o bladei ce'o zirdei) is okay, but it achieves neutrality by being familiar to no one. In both the Sun-Moon-element system and the color system, there is a word for "nonexistent day of the week": vardei in the element system (air being a Greco-Roman element that is not an East Asian element) and nukydei, labdei, or xekydei in the color system. Thus one can answer "ca ma do zukte li'o" with "lo cinomoi be lo febvari be'o noi vardei". mu'omi'e .piier. -- Lanthanidia deliciosa: What the kiwifruit would be if it weren't so radioactive. _______________________________________________ Llg-members mailing list Llg-members@lojban.org http://mail.lojban.org/mailman/listinfo/llg-members
