The use of square brackets means that the word is not an equivalent, but 
it could be used in a translation in a more limited sense than for the 
rest of the definition.

In the above, a newspaper is a particular kind of karni - one that 
contains news, and hence is not a good translation.  However, we wanted 
to get it in there because the English word "newspaper" is usually 
translated as karni, and at that point, the dictionary being built by 
key-word-in-context automated techniques.
