A language proficiency test is usually not about translation. It's fine for the test instructions to be given in English, but the test itself should be Lojban only. For example, things like: Choose the word that best completes the following Lojban sentences: (1) mi klama ____ zarci (A) le (B) li (C) ku (D) cu (2) lo tirxu cu ____ (A) dinju (B) danlu (C) spati (D) tricu and so on to more difficult questions, such as reading a short story in Lojban and answering questions about it. For the listening part you can be asked to hear a word or sentence and write it down, or identify it among some options, or hear a story and answer questions about it, etc. All of that can be multiple choice and so easy to grade objectively. Grading pronunciation and speaking ability is a bit more complicated, but it should also be based only on Lojban, not on translating. Translating ability is a different skill from language proficiency. So as a friendly amendment I suggest that the tests should not be mainly or even at all about translation. mu'o mi'e xorxes
