From the footer on your messages which says =93This Email was sent by a stu=
dent at School for the Blind=94, I guess that you might be using a text-to-=
speech system. Perhaps it speaks the words =93left brace=94 or =93right bra=
ce=94 when it encounters a brace symbol, such as these: { }.

Those symbols are being used to quote actual Lojban words, like this: {sims=
a}. That was the Lojban word =93simsa=94, in braces; the word means somethi=
ng like =93is similar to=94.
