I feel a bit dumb for asking, but...well, looking in the gismu list and other such wordlists, almost all the entries have "cf." followed = by a list of gismu which, upon further investigation, are related to the original gismu in an unclear manner.  (Unclear to me, at least.)  What exactly is meant by that cf.?
