Two things have recently “clicked” = with me regarding modals (one  a few weeks ago, and the second just = today), and I wanted to make sure I’ve gotten it right, because I never quite = “got” this from the CLL

1)       = Modals are simply another “slot” in the bridi, no less than FA are, and = not just a separate thing that just kind of hangs off there in space.  For = example, the definition of “mlatu” could have (in some sense) been = written “X1 is a cat, forced by BAI, in language BAU, etc….”  (I = think what has always confused me here is the way that jbofi’e (at least = the web version?) puts a BAI phrase in parentheses, off by itself, so = visually isolating it, intead of the way it says, for example, “[zmadu2 = exceeded things] :} mi “_

1b)  As  such, a = BAI slot can go anywhere in a bridi that a FA can, doesn’t have to be off = at the end: mi pa klama bai lo ka xagji ku le gusta (I went, compelled by = hunger, to the restaurant).

2)       = Tenses can also act as modals (subject to the caveat in Chap. 10, sect. 23), which = is why things like “co’u le nu mi citka kei mi vamtu” (At the = end of my eating, I threw up)  work.

=    2b) (and hence, they too, can appear anywhere any “slot” can = appear:  mi pa klama ba le nu mi citka kei le zdanii (“I went, after eating, = home”)

And none of these non-numbered slots = (BAI, ZAhO, PU, etc.) affect the numbering of non-tagged sumti (the way that members = of FA would),  the untagged sumti  just continue getting stuck in = where they last left off (or otherwise redirected by = FA).

So, have I got this right??  (and I = think I just had epiphany number three – this is what the heck is meant = by sumti tcita, isn’t it??)
