It is also useful as a sort of "air quote". Of course, it's *requiredness* can be a pain to those who are used to sarcasm. It's just a price to pay for "audio-visual isomorphism", I guess. As for this situation, I'd either avoid sarcasm altogether, or make the sentence longer (*je'unai ba'e mutce cai xajmi*). To indicate anger without being sarcastic, you use *o'onai*.
