I think the story goes something like this: First there was "number MOI". Then this was extended to "lerfu-string MOI", because lerfu strings can be used in many places where numbers can be used. But then lerfu-string is also a sumti, and so they wanted to be able to convert any sumti with MOI too. The problem is that "sumti MOI" by itself would make the grammar not LALR1 and this was considered a problem. Since they already had "ME sumti /MEhU/" as the conversion of sumti into a tanru-unit, they added "ME sumti /MEhU/ MOI" as well. At least that's what I think happened. mu'o mi'e xorxes
