While you might feel comfortable pointing to ground chicken or chicken eggs and saying "It is chicken," I doubt you would feel as comfortable saying "It is a chicken." In the first, you are using "chicken" descriptively, more like an adjective - and I feel the Lojbanic translations would be "ta jipca broda" and "ta jipca" respectively. When you say "lo gerku cu batci mi" you mean "some dog(s) bit me" not "some dog-like thing(s) bit me." I am new and may stand corrected, but this is my understanding of "lo".
