I can't think of a way to define "evidence" in english better than "something which gives credence to the belief that ____". I think it's only in english that we think of "reason for believing" as being somehow less sciency than "evidence". So I would say that X in "apples fall is X that newton was right" and "the fact that I ate is X that I was hungry" are the same thing. I think you'll be hard-pressed to find a distinction between the two. The one just sounds like it should be "evidence" because it's being rendered in a scientific context while the other is more mundane day-to-day sounding "reason". lo nu lo plise cu farlu cu nibyti'i zoi .gy law of universal gravitation .gy lo nu mi citka cu nibyti'i lo nu mi xagji On Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 10:24 AM, .arpis. wrote: > But what if I want to say something like "That an apple falls is evidence > that Newton is right." > > (How would one call "the law of universal gravitation" in lojban?) > > {lo du'u lo plise ku na'o farlu kei ku nibyti'i lo du'u la .niutyn. jai > drani} doesn't seem right to me; it's not evident (which I take to be more > or less synonymous with obvious) that an apple falling indicates that Newton > is right. > > {lo du'u lo plise ku na'o farlu kei ku zilvelji'i lo du'u la .niutyn. jai > drani kei lo termu'eske} seems to be closer to what is meant when "evidence" > is used. > > On Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 6:09 AM, Remo Dentato wrote: >> >> On Mon, Jul 25, 2011 at 12:25 AM, .arpis. >> wrote: >> > (While writing this, I realize that {nibyti'i} almost means what I want, >> > but >> > I'm not sure if {lo nibyti'i} can be used to mean "evidence"). >> >> I would go with {nibyti'i} as it is already in jbovlaste. >> For example I would use it as follows: >> >> {lo du'u do nelci ku se nibyti'i} -> it is evident that you like it! >> >> {lo nu do citka ku nibyti'i lo du'u do nelci} -> Since you're eating >> it, you surely like it! >> >> remod >> >> -- >> You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups >> "Lojban Beginners" group. >> To post to this group, send email to lojban-beginners@googlegroups.com. >> To unsubscribe from this group, send email to >> lojban-beginners+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com. >> For more options, visit this group at >> http://groups.google.com/group/lojban-beginners?hl=en. >> > > > > -- > mu'o mi'e .arpis. > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "Lojban Beginners" group. > To post to this group, send email to lojban-beginners@googlegroups.com. > To unsubscribe from this group, send email to > lojban-beginners+unsubscribe@googlegroups.com. > For more options, visit this group at > http://groups.google.com/group/lojban-beginners?hl=en. > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Lojban Beginners" group.
