Does "Vi" just tend to sound like "V" lengthened? Is this just a generic issue in linguistics in general?

When you said "lrfu" and "lerfu" are the same for you, you're effectively saying that either "lrfu" has an arbitrary "e" inserted OR you're saying that "lerfu" drops the "e". Either way, it's discomfiting.
