Pre-dot side, non-{cmevla} containing "la" were treated exactly the same as other non-{cmevla}, and the dot side doesn't change that. The only changes the dot side makes are (1) {cmevla} may freely contain "la", "lai", "la'i", and "doi" (as long as they still end in a consonant and obey all the other rules of Lojban morphology), and (2) each {cmevla} must be preceded by a pause (and, as before, followed by one), but as periods and spaces are functionally nigh-identical in written text, they are often not represented.
