Most English verbs have no more than three places, where x1 is the subject, x2 is the direct object, and x3 is the indirect object. At least one verb (namely "bet") has a fourth place. If "to" is not used to mark the indirect object, the order is x1 verb x3 x2 x4. In the ergative alignment, x1 is the direct object, x2 is the subject, and x3 is the indirect object. I don't know any ergative languages. Lojban lacks alignment. In a bridi with "dunda", x3 is the indirect object, but in a bridi with "grake", x3 isn't a subject, direct object, or indirect object; it's the standard used to define the unit (currently a hunk of metal stored in a suburb of Paris, hopefully soon a physical constant like the rest of them). Some categories of brivla have consistent place assignments; all second places of words denoting kinds of plant, animal, or other living thing denote a taxon to which the living thing belongs. Similarly all second places of measuring words denote the numerical value. But there is no connection between x2 of grake/mitre/delno and x2 of lanme/tirxu/finpe/xruba.
