I also think that "geeky" contents can have a place in the new wiki. (Under the condition that they are up-to-date and not cryptic, or at least explains what it is about.) There are good things and not-so-good things in the old wiki. Lojbanic writings, project pages and maintained pages are good, and salvageable. (example: nicte cadzu) Old "discussions" should not be moved to the new wiki. (example: [1]) Ideally, in my view, the new wiki will have a super beginner-friendly frontpage and also in-depth articles are accepted (example: about the various parsers). I agree that "we should aim to= make it as user-friendly and up to date as possible."
I also thi= nk that "geeky" contents can have a place in the new wiki.
(Under= the condition that they are up-to-date and not cryptic, or at le= ast explains what it is about.)

There are good thi= ngs and not-so-good things in the old wiki.
Lojbanic writings, pr= oject pages and maintained pages are good, and salvageable. (example: nicte= cadzu)
Old "discussions" should not be moved to the new wiki. (e= xample: [1])

Ideally, in my view, the new wiki wil= l have a super beginner-friendly frontpage and also
in-depth arti= cles are accepted (example: about the various parsers).

Probably this is realised through additio= nal templates. It's absolutely not a problem provided that you give me some= links to Mediawiki-based (i.e. ~ looking the same as Wikipedia) web-sittes= that have such feature. Then I'll do the rest of work to import that featu= re too LMW.

Extension:Semantic MediaWiki [2] wit= h Extension:Semantic Forms [3] looks promising.

[2= ] http://semantic-mediawiki.org/
[3] http://www.mediawiki.org/wik= i/Extension:Semantic_Forms

Usage example:
* Individual page with annotation: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_G1= G1
* Edit with a user-friendly form: http://wiki.laptop.org/= index.php?title=3DOLPC_G1G1&action=3Dformedit
* Aggregated li= st of pages: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Deployments#Deployment_data

I may be biased about its user-friendliness though.
