It's always a problem trying to translate these sorts of=20 specific nouns from Biblical Hebrew. Without a continuous tradition, or=20 contemporary witness, it's very difficult to say what precisely most of=20 these words mean. Many of them are hapax legomena as well (as I think=20 this may be). I have a Torah translation that's pretty thorough about collecting=20 sources for this kind of thing ("The Living Torah" by Rabbi Aryeh=20 Kaplan). He says: "bison: Te'o in Hebrew, cf. Isaiah 4:5. That is, the "wild ox" (Targum=20 Yonathan, Sifri, Rashi, Ibn Janach, Radak, Sherashim). The Septuagint=20 translates it as oruga or orux, either the oryx, a large straight horned=20 antelope, or the aurochs, the "wild ox." Saadia also identifies it with=20 oryx, tethal in Arabic. Chizzkuni renders it as shulia." Huh. Usually I can count on him for some Linnean binomials even, but I=20 guess the "wild ox" is just Bos taurus. ~mark --=20 You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "= lojban" group.
