As there seems some confusion:

My point was only that they *strongly* prefer English, because it's
so much easier.

That is: their current abilities are normal and expected for their
age.  It's the degree of difference in the difficulty, and hence
preference, that is striking.

In a monolingual household, it wouldn't matter, but a monolingual
Lojban household seems improbable.
