I... think it doesn't say that in the text. I recall reading somewhere 
that that was the reason for their name. Now I can only find a German 
wiki article

Maybe it's explained in some of the other books or in a movie. I'm not 
sure it's true, but there is no strong evidence in favor of *any* of the 
explanations I've heard so far (which I mentioned in the mail you 
responded to).

That's a cute idea, but will it be easier to understand? It's not even 
clear that it's referring to a person. What if you haven't read the 
original?

I'm actually not aware of any German editions that have illustrations. 
My grandmother read to me from the German version when I was around 7, 
but I can't recall having seen any illustrations.
