If I understand right, the object of "ri'u" is the place to whose right 
something happens, whereas the object of "vi" is the distance (which is 
short), so "ri'u ko'a vi ko'a" wouldn't make sense. But the two phrases 
combine to mean "a short distance on the right", not "somewhere on the right, 
then a short distance".

I'm about to check out of the inn, so I don't have time to look it up.
