Yes, several of us have had longer conversations on Skype or Mumble. 
It's just not a regular thing (time zones are one big problem, another 
one is laziness, and perhaps insecurity plays a role, too).

As for mishearing words in noisy channels, it doesn't seem to happen any 
more than it does in English. And when you do fail to hear a word, you 
can ask for the other person to repeat.

If you are looking for someone to practice oral communication with, I 
recommend you come on IRC and let the people there know.
