I think it is making some assumptions about the reader's dialect of En= glish. In American pronunciation for instance, "joke" and "n= ote" indeed have a sound which could only be the "o" in Lojb= an. It is not necessarily the preferred Lojban "o" sound, but it is too far from "a" and "au" for any confusion. (Th= is is one of the advantages of not having very many vowels!)
