interpreted as "tusk" and so the sentence would mean "=E2=80=A6 and he took=
 its=20
tusk". However that seems contextually less likely that "he took its=20
defense" as one would have expected the word "d=C3=A9fense"/tusk to be in t=
he=20
plural, unless it is known that elephant had only one tusk.
