It's part of the bootstrapping process, you need to mount the root system to know how to mount the root system :) It also says "readonly", this is probably not true either. Usually the root filesystem is remounted read/write. But if ext3 is working normally, you shouldn't see the .journal file. e2fsck will hide it, I think. Regards, -- Martin Norbäck
