I don't think that convenience in a hypothetical math usage should trump convenience in everyday usage. Still, strings with numbers would remain easy: {uburebu} instead of {ubure} for U2, and there is no arbitrary restriction to the number being in first position: {cibumy} for 3M. Numbers with letters as digits would not be so straightforward, but what would they be used for?
