Last I heard, there was no consensus on this. As I understand it, some people begin the week on Sunday and others on Monday. We can have the same names for six days of the week by using {zeldei} or (nondei} for Sunday. But that leaves the Seventh-day Adventists with {xavdei}. I can see a trace of the controversy in Russian. Вторник, четверг, and пятница indicate that Monday is day one, but среда indicates that Wednesday is the middle day.
