I guess technically "ex= treme" means "the most that is possible" so technically you can't have var= ying degrees of "extreme"ness.  But in day to day english people say= things like "extreme cold".  Does that mean that it's the coldest th= at it is physically possible to get?  No, just that it's really reall= y freaking cold.
