Lojbanising words?

Author: CQuake

Hello, all,
first of all, let me introduce myself: I'm Sabrina, Brazilian woman whi= ch is actually living in the heart of the green heart of Austria: the tiny = and beautiful city of Graz. Pleasure to meet you! =3D)

Actually I'm learning Lojban via Lojban for Beginners, and I (already) = have a doubt, about lojbanising words:

Athens - Athina, for instance, becomes .atinas. In Portuguese we use to say= A-TEH-nas, and in Italian, A-TEH-ne. So how should I lojbanise these words= ? Does it exist a sort of common rule?

Thank you, guys.

coi fi'i sabrinas

When= Lojbanizing place names, the basic rule is to start with the pronunciation= used in the place itself. For Athens, you'd start with the local or st= andard modern Greek pronunciation (the latter, I think, is=C2=A0 /a=CB=88=CE=B8ina/)= , and then approximating it with the Lojban sound system, adding a consonan= t to the end if necessary. Hence, {.atinas.}.

Good luck in your studies and feel free to ask questions here or on IRC= (#lojban on the Freenode network -- loj= ban.org/irc/).

mu'o mi'e komfo,amonan
