Anyone have a good expression for bit? > (People's spontaneous lujvo for other facets of computer terminology would > be welcome). Hi, a 98%-silent list observer here .. As a computer dweeb, I can say that the essence of a bit is that it is 0/1, and otherwise devoid of content or meaning. Content and meaning come purely from the context. And it is true that a bit can be said to have a physical "existence", but only in a pretty abstracted, invisible way, and this "existence" is independent of the physical medium used (magnetic disk, optical disk, tape, whatever ..). Therefore I would propose that a lujvo should convey these ideas. Perhaps, something like "only barely-tangible true/false indicator". Hope this helps. -- * Fred Baube (tm) GU/MSFS/88 baube@optiplan.fi * #include * Free Leonard Peltier !
