I have thought of turning the English around like this, Under conditions other than unexpectedly sunny John would have gone to Edinburgh, but instead he stayed in England. Alternatively Motivated by the unexpected sun, John stayed in England and did not go to Edinburgh. Both of these seem awkward. Robert J.
