If you say {le nanmu}, it's because what you are calling a {nanmu} looks like one. (If the definition is not to be changed, then leave everything as it is, and usage will probably force the physical object interpretation anyway, maybe along with the other. :) If x1 is not going to be the physical object, I don't see why one would want a relationship between the author/theme/audience, and the preserving medium.
