As far as I know, the spammers are NOT subscribing to the list; they have simply located the posting address somewhere and are mailing to it, often combined with addresses of other lists. The Listserv software we're using runs on a VM/CMS machine at Columbia, over which we have very little control. There are some options that can be turned on; I will investigate (probably next week) whether it's possible to set the Listserv so that only subscribers can post.
