Never used it as a programmer, but as a user, if you're going for cross-unix portability, it doesn't get any better that I'm aware of. If I was a programmer, I'd use it from the start in any new UNIX projects (I'm a sysadmin; too task-oriented to be a programmer) regardless of the headache involved.
