There is no such thing as a common European culture, even though the EU propagandists would like us to believe that there is :) First names are normally used in Sweden, even when talking to strangers, except in extremely formal situations. In Germany it's completely different; a German student would not address his professor by first name, while a Swedish student would. One thing that is different between the USA and Sweden though, is the usage of words like "luv" and "hon".
