The number of syllables is counted, but if the final word ends with a stressed syllable one is added. If there are any after the final stressed syllable, only the first of those are counted. So, if a nine-syllable line ends with a word like "LOBykai", it counts as only eight syllables; if it ends with a name like "la .DJAN.", it counts as ten. Then each line is given the same number of syllables. For example, a traditional "romance" has lines of eight syllables with vowel-rhyme on all of the even syllables. A sonnet has fourteen lines of eleven syllables each and a consonant (typical end-rhyme) rhyme scheme of ABBA ABBA and then some variable scheme for the final six lines. -- .kreig.daniyl.
