I've thought about translating them as personal names (la henry) with some kind of tag on them. Do we have the "sverdrup"? That's 1e15 cubic meters per second, a reasonably scaled unit for ocean currents named after a founder of that field. I would deprecate all the scaled units like this one, and make everyone use E format, e.g. "the flux of North Atlantic Deep Water was 8e15 M^3/s before Bush's environmental policies pushed..."
