Well, the native official name of the country is
"Bharat", as you suggest.  I suppose one can
still hear "Hind" used, but it tends to stir up
Moslem citizens -- and it is not even a native
word, being Persian in origin (the halfway stop
between the native "Sindhu" "The River' (now all
in Pakistan)and the Greek "Indos" and "India" --
/s/ had a hard time in the ancient East)
