The understanding that the English lord was deaf must come from the very last words of the story. ;) Having to realize that the guy was mostly deaf and that that's the reason the servent said what he said and that the guy couldn't hear what the servent just said and that now the guy could hear the servent because of the new hearing aid and that this is bad for the servent, all at the same time, is a bit much to ask of a joke.
