Then you've led a very sheltered life. :) The usual classification is SVO. The object is normally taken to be a part of the predicate, the predicate is the rest of the sentence besides the subject. I suppose we can get away with using "verb" for both senses because the verb of SVO usually can only consist of a verb in the part-of-speech sense.
