Some families are the "normal" mom and dad, or they are gay, and now, polyamorous families are starting to come in. Then there are divorces, single parents, adoption, re-marrying, etc, etc. Families are much too complicated for family names to work, and i don't think they're worth it anyway. I've already planned to abandon my last name, so now i just need to figure out what to adopt for a new name. Asimov's idea that Luke posted certainly is interesting and i like it but it obviously isn't very practical.
