Java is very portable. But it is also very inflexible. I'd recommend Python, which is also quite portable, and a dynamic language. Also, it's open-source. If you really want to ge AI on a computer's arse, then you should use a form of Lisp (I'd say Common Lisp, since it's the best defined and usable dialect) only to tackle the AI's behavior, and use some other language to handle the 3D world then and perceptions of the AI. They would communicate through a virtual server.
