I understand this usage (jai selbri) but the other usage (jai BAI/jai PU/jai
X) confuses the crap out of me no matter how many times it has been
explained to me.
If someone would be willing to explain it in simple (read: stupid people)
terms I will put my greatest effort into understanding it again.
I can say with some certainty that it is/will be the last piece of lojban
grammar for me to "get"

No, it's more specific that that. It switches some unspecified place
from *inside* the original x1 (which must be an abstraction), into x1.
