Not only is the code they released extremely old and unmaintained, but it contains an exception in the license which is incompatible with the open source definition. In fact, they don't even want users to run their own installations. "You are right that we shouldn't claim that our code is Open Source Foundation compliant" [1] "The logic has never been to let people to run it on their own servers tbh." [1] BuddyPress seems interesting though. :) That said, I think we've veered off topic. I don't think a social networking site is especially relevant to a news project.
