That community has created a large number of tools to revert and cleanup problems, and defaults to soft-security. Including the sometimes ridiculous of giving a stern warning on the talk page of an IP address in the process of vandalism. Wikipedia likely has a greater need for a 'default-open' policy than lojban.org, but I do think the ban-hammer should be a last resort, with prevention and development of better cleanup tools our higher priority. The tension being of course: how much spam are you willing to prevent if it turns away a legitimate users?
