The Royal Society (t= he UK's science academy) and the UK Department for International Developmen= t has launched a £15.3 million (US$24 million) fund to build links be= tween African research laboratories to strengthen their research capacity t= hrough mentoring.

The aim is to provide equipment and training for= African scientists, and to establish researcher exchange programs between = the UK and Sub-Saharan Africa.  The fund will provide start-up money f= or new collaborations among labs.

ACS Sends U.S. Gr= aduate Students to Prague=0A

Through the Executive Direc= tor’s Initiative Fund, ACS sponsored travel awards for nine talented = U.S. graduate students to attend and present their research at the 4th EuCh= eMS Chemistry Congress in Prague, Czech Republic from August 26-30, 2012.&n= bsp; The winners selected through peer review were: Kristen Brown (Northwes= tern University); Laura Donahue (Loyola University Chicago); Nasim Ehterami= (Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville); Katie Hurley (Univers= ity of Minnesota – =0ATwin Cities); Melissa Kern (Colorado School of = Mines); Victoria Mooney (Yale University); Terrence Neumann (Marquette Univ= ersity), Glen O’Neil (Tufts University); and Darci Trader (Indiana Un= iversity – Bloomington).

In addition to their excellent rese= arch talks and posters, the award winners attended a panel discussion arran= ged in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy in Prague.  The panel feature= d representatives of various organizations and institutions of the European= Union and the Czech Republic who discussed funding, research, educational,= and job opportunities in the region.  The winners also attended netwo= rking dinners with their European counterparts, took part in a joint ACS/GD= Ch reception, and =0Ahad breakfast with ACS Executive Director and CEO, Mad= eleine Jacobs.
