4th Annual Chemical Sciences and Society Summit=0A
The ACS Committee o= n International Activities, through the ACS Office of International Activities, recently organized the 4th An= nual Ch3D"CS3emical Sciences = and Society Summit (CS3) in San Francisco, California from September 17-20,= 2012. CS3 is a series co-sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation= and its counterparts: National Natural Science Foundation of China; Japan = Society for the Promotion of Science; German Research Foundation (Deutsche = Forschungsgemeinschaft); and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Cou= ncil of the United Kingdom. Dr.= Marjam G. Behar was born in Poland.  She moved to Portugal in Behar
1930 and then to Cuba in 1939.  By the time she was in high s= chool, she was fluent in Yiddish, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish.  Wit= h a doctorate from the University of Havana, she emigrated with her husband= (also a chemist) and two year-old son to the U.S. in 1955.  She worke= d for 20 years as a researcher in analytical chemistry at the Hospital of t= he University of Pennsylvania, and then served for another 21 years as a hi= ghly respected grants administrator at the National Institutes =0Aof Health= , where she led a study section in biophysical and chemical sciences. The Chemical Society of Mexico (SQM) and the Federation of Latin America= n Chemical Associations partnered in organizing this outreach event, which = was held on October 27th during the Congress of Latin-American Chemical Ass= ociations (CLAQ 2012).  The three-hour event, = preceded by a day of training, had more than 50 volunteers conducting hands= -on activities highlighting the value of chemistry in our daily lives. = ; With the theme of Water and Polymers, the Festival had close to 1,000 par= ticipants and was highlighted in the local newspaper, as well as local gove= rnment media.
